Generate expenses_extracted.xlsx from Combined.pdf (Windows)
If finances/Combined.pdf is image-based (scanned), install OCR tools and run the extractor to create finances/expenses_extracted.xlsx.
1) Open Command Prompt as Administrator, then install OCR tools (Chocolatey is already installed on this machine):
"C:\ProgramData\chocolatey\bin\choco.exe" install tesseract -y
"C:\ProgramData\chocolatey\bin\choco.exe" install poppler -y
2) From the repo root, ensure the Excel writer gem is present (safe to run again):
cd /d C:\Users\desja\PycharmProjects\ubu-ai.github.io
gem install write_xlsx
3) Generate both TXT and XLSX outputs:
ruby scripts\ocr_extract_expenses.rb finances\Combined.pdf finances\expenses_extracted.txt finances\expenses_extracted.xlsx
4) Verify outputs:
dir finances
type finances\expenses_extracted.txt | more
Troubleshooting
- “Missing required tools: pdftoppm”: re-run step 1. The extractor auto-detects common install paths like
C:\\ProgramData\\chocolatey\\lib\\poppler\\tools\\pdftoppm.exeandC:\\Program Files\\Tesseract-OCR\\tesseract.exe. - If you ran commands from another folder (e.g.,
C:\\Windows\\System32), switch to the repo root in step 2 or pass absolute paths for all three arguments. - If a refund is labeled differently (e.g., “CREDIT”), the script already includes it; tell us if you need additional keywords.
